Data Post One over identity online: my findings through articles
Going over the articles I will be using, I have formatted a plan to follow throughout my research monitoring specific posts and reposts on the media platforms of linkedin, Facebook, and twitter. Specific posts that will be put into consideration is the number of posts dealing with images such as selfies and other photos of the accounts user, retweeted, liked, and comments they have made towards posts. From the use of the four participants I have so far and three others pending at the moment I have collected data dealing with identity work being a factor in each of their posts. The posts being understood with the idea that each participant is performing their role and identity in terms of their real life via online social media. Using the acronym coined in the Ted Talk by Alexandra Samuel, (Top 10 reasons to Stop Apologizing Your Online Life) IRL(In Real Life) refers to the offline world most people see themselves being in dividing the two worlds but through the use of the three pieces of media I am monitoring I have found that there is no real difference for some of these participants dealing with the posts pertaining to both the things they enjoy and love but also the things that connect them to their job as well as other aspects of life like being a college student. Referencing the idea in The Qualified Self, " the textual object of self- representation matters because it can be reengaged with. When people perform their identities through media accounting, they create representations. The media traces they write or create become texts which can be read by themselves and others." Through close analysis of each participant in all fields from photos, posts, and likes/comments I have come to conclusive data that representations play a extremely large role in the formulation of one's identity online and does it in a way that helps formulate the "me" that society finds in someone, their perceived role. Each participant with data collected has so far clarified that identity online is similar to identity work offline. Although this may change with the three other participants as they are added into the research in my next post I will show the statistical data I have so far and in a later blog post I will discuss further with each participant going deeper into a transcribed portion of data that I hope to compare to this statistical data I have collected so far.
